Student Health: Let's Get Physical

Sports physicals can help kids gear up for the season—and a healthy life

Published:

Roughly 44 million American kids play at least one sport. That’s great for fitness and social development, but the pressure to win can raise the intensity of play to unhealthy levels. Doctors are seeing a 25-percent spike in overuse injuries and an increase in their severity. During a sports physical a doctor can evaluate fitness levels, detect injuries and can give advice on how to play with an existing condition, such as asthma. Sport physicals are most common before the season starts, but there’s never a bad time to get one. Read more about sports physicals here. It’s also a good time to make sure your kids are up-to-date on their vaccines. For a list of what the state requires, click here, and check out fun ideas for bento box school lunches here.
